Our First Birthday!

Dr Sketchy’s Bristol Celebrates a year of glamour, burlesque, and crazy kitsch

Old school glamour, captivating cabaret and local circus artists will all join Dr Sketchy’s Bristol in celebrating it’s one year anniversary, with a one off special event hosted at Pink Kitten Dance School in July.

Dr. Sketchy’s is the setting for life drawing classes with a difference. Fusing classic drawing techniques with contemporary trends and styles, it allows artists to express themselves in a fun and exciting atmosphere. Since its foundation in New York City in 2005 by Ms Molly Crabapple, Dr. Sketchy’s has wasted no time in spreading its creative vibe all over the world, and gaining credibility in each city it dwells.

Over the past year Bristol has hosted seven Dr Sketchy ‘sell out’ sessions in which talented artists have been inspired by Circus performers, burlesque artist, drag queens, singers and even ‘Alfred’ popped down from the museum for a session.

‘I’m overwhelmed and thrilled with the response we’ve had for our unique ever growing art school’ say’s Bristol’s Sketchy’s founder Boo, ‘Creative and vibrant; stylish and edgy: Bristol’s notorious underground art scene has proven to be the perfect home for Dr Sketchy’s ‘anti-art’ school.’

‘Our school is independently run and exists through hard work, persistence and support from our fans and friends! I would also like to thank local business Bristol Fine Art shop, Beesting events and Pink Kitten Dance School for they’re kindness and support through our first year…here’s to the next 10’

Dr Sketchy’s attracts a dynamic and varied crowd of artists, from graffiti fans, to fine artists and enthusiastic first-time scribblers, producing a giddying array of different styles. Some use pencil, others ink, chalk, acrylics, sometimes even iPads. You can see some of the fabulous work produced on the Dr Sketchy’s Bristol website and Facebook pages.

Each class is a three-hour, fun-filled session featuring fantastic costumes and the opportunity to see live performances from some great name on the UK’s alternative cabaret scene.

Unlike most art classes, silence is not mandatory and you can enjoy a drink from the bar while listening to there groovy psychedelic soundtrack as you sketch.

‘ There’s no need for fear: our doors are open to artists of all persuasions, experienced and amateur alike—even stick-man scribblers!’

With Halloween just around the corner, we thought we would have a little fun of our own here at Sketchy’s Bristol with a spooky spectacular.

Dressed to kill and with mischief on our minds we let loose our inner demons for Bristol’s most quirky sketchy session to date.

Slightly shorter than our usual sessions but with just as much entertainment to cram in we had one hell of a variety show for our audience.

To welcome all our wonderful artist’s Cabaret Abittor scared the day lights out of folks with they’re fiendish make up and un-naturally long legs, I must point out that they we’re our stilt walkers.

Once everyone was seated the lights went down and Bristol’s own Screaming Keating took to the stage with his own rendition of ‘Wilkommen’ to get our audience warmed up and in the mood for some serious sketching action.

Cue DJ Hammond’d B-Movie mix of music, the host  ’B-movie Merkin Queen’ Lou-Leigh Blue who appeared to have had a slight accident with a pencil and a spider and Ramona Rosa had her pumpkins out.

Next up with welcomed our chaos creating, lovable 80’s character ‘Beetlejuice’ - throwing poses, bugs and burps all over the room. Under all that hair and extreme make-up we had the very talented Welsh lovely Sandy Sure who later performed at the Bristol Burlesque Festival with her Lizard routine, we hope taking off all that make up wasn’t to much trouble?

Last but not least we introduced the ‘Voodoo Queen of Burlesque’ and co-producer of the Bristol Burlesque Festival Tuesday Laveau  to end what had been the oddest Dr Sketchy’s in Bristol to date. Dressed as the all seeing eye but with some damn fine Go-Go boots, Tuesday’s tassels gave everyone a run for they’re money.

The art work that our audience displayed was incredible, it captured the vibrance and originality of session from start to finish.

Thank you Bristol once again for making Dr.Sketchy’s such a success we cannot wait for our Christmas special on the 1st December back at our abode of The Stag and Hounds.

Thank you Bristol!

On a baking hot summers day , in an old fashion pub on Old Market Dr.Sketchy’s Bristol was born! With people cueing at the door and tickets selling fast this show was set to be a sell out and Bristol did not let us down!

'Playing her bongo's' thank you Ashley Boddy- Model Didi Curv'e

We promised this would be a unique life drawing class and people were not disappointed. With stunning burlesque performance’s from Poppy Raine and Didi Curv’e ‘that lady who really know’s how to play her bongo’s’ our three hour class kept our sketchers on the edge of they’re seats.

The show kicked off with Bristol’s very own ‘Stoke Croft’s Siren’ Ally Katte in her  renaissance inspired costume accompanied by obscure 60’s garage and b-movie mania music thanks to David Hammonds dj skills.

Line Drawing by Laura Elliot. Model-Ally Katte

As everyone got stuck into the class host Ms Lou-Leigh Blue made sure everyone was comfortable and filled in the gap’s with her dry humour to entertain the class.

The audience we’re in awe of the stunning costumes and elegant poses. With a fantastic silk fan dance and one rather skilled bongo playing session, even the compaire and Dj couldn’t resit and got they’re sketch books out

Water colours by Norman Barnes. Model- Poppy Raine

The art works produced in this session we’re of such high quality and variety and we truly cannot wait for all out guests to send in they’re images so we can share them on our website!

We would like to thank everyone who came to the first ever Dr.Sketchy’s Bristol and made it such a huge susses, we are already planning our September session and looking at some fabulous performers to entertain you and dazzle you with sequins and skin.

Keep an eye out for further information
